11/30/12 Falling Creek

John and Chris were already out there when I got there.  They were soaking down some of the newer work, we need a good rain badly.  If it would just rain a half inch every few days or week it would help a good bit.   I started moving dirt from the bottom of the hill up to the step up lander to make sure it's wide enough for people to make mistakes safely.  I started piling up the dirt for the roller before the step up also.  I'll be scraping for dirt to make it to the bottom.   I scraped some from the sides today to help create the foundation for the addition on the landing and the beginning of the table before the step up.

Hey Neighbour: Jerry Willows from nsmb.com on Vimeo.

Jerry Willows has been pushing his limits on the North Shore since the turn of the millennium, both on the bike and building trail. Since the glory days of freeride, Jerry has been putting his gear through the paces. His lasting impression on the Shore is the now-historic Jerry Rig trail on Fromme, a progressive freeride trail in its time, that starts with an extremely narrow curved skinny that even Jerry wouldn’t touch these days. We bring Jerry’s story to you from the front lines of the new Shore, where turns laid with mineral gold link bench cut over innovative drainage solutions. The Shore has changed, and so has Jerry.

John was there when I got there and had already made a few water runs. He got most all the newer stuff watered down. Kenny started moving some more dirt to the bottom. I didn't get there until about four so I just foot stomped some stuff and road. It was riding good, really grippy after getting some rain on Tuesday. It just wasn't enough to do any real good, just knocked down the dust a little. We'll take any help we can get. Sorry no photos.

11/26/12 Falling Creek

John and I made it out today.  When I got there he was tamping down the fresh dirt on jump 1 and 2.  We talked with Kenny about what was left to be done and how much dirt we needed to finish.   Heard a bad story about some bikes making their way into the skate park over the weekend.   They take the no bikes thing seriously at the skate park.   Anytime there is a skate park it will attract bikes and signs are just signs unfortunately; people make their own decisions.  I would encourage anyone who rides bikes to not ride at the Bedford skate park.  It does look to be a really nice park and it's a shame that bikes aren't allowed.   The police station is right across the street and it's strictly enforced unfortunately.  Kenny is trying to give people on bikes a place to ride right around the corner. Hopefully it can become good enough to not care about riding at the skate park.  He said they are working on getting more signs up to show where the bike park is so people know where to go.  It ended up kinda coming back on us and the trail we've been working on, so please stay out of the skate park on bikes.

John and I got in some runs until dark, packed some fresh dirt and called it a day.   It was rolling fast!  New step up is lots of fun.  I look forward to shovel time and getting it dialed in.  It's already fun, so it'll get even better easily.  I'd like to take the main 3 jumps up a little bit to slow things down slightly, in time..... sorry no photos.

11/25/12 Falling Creek

Jess and John came out to help and ride.  When I got there they were already there trying out the new step up.  A couple of younger guys were coming up the hill as they got closer I realized they were younger then I thought.  They were about 12 years old or so. Turns out they had been there before on Thanksgiving and came back out today.  They were charging it!  I also found out that Jacob has been digging at his place with the help of his Dad and neighbor, they have berms, jumps and log rides.  It was cool to see these guys ride.

We got the dirt moved around on the second landing and got it soaked.  John also watered down the first landing, it was real dry where it still has fresh dirt on it.  I worked on smacking in the second landing.  John and Jess were itching like little kids to hit the step up they couldn't resist.  I finished up smacking in the landing and got out the bike.

Verdict:  Both berms that we added dirt too this weekend are more confidence inspiring when rolling into them.  The one in the photo feels a good bit deeper which is fun.  The step up is a ton of fun, it needs more dirt on the landing also.

Another solid day of work. Randy, John, Chuck, and DJ made it out to help and ride. We added dirt to two berms and two jumps. It was nice when the wind wasn't blowing but when the wind picked up it was pretty chilly. Got down to the last of the top soil, still a little bit left to be scraped up.

11/23/12 Falling Creek

John, Randy and I headed out to Falling Creek to put in some more work.  The dirt Kenny moved that I mentioned in the last post made it so much easier having it right there.  Everything could still use more dirt as always, hopefully after the new year.  Randy and John made a water run while I was moving dirt.  By the time they finished watering I had a pretty good mound of dirt.  I needed to get some of the top soil from the top of the hill to the bottom so we used the ditch witch to load Randy's truck and shoveled it out by hand, whatever it takes.  Still needs more dirt, and it was super soft when I left tonight but hopefully it'll settle soon.  Might take a minute during the freeze thaw period.

11/21/12 Falling Creek

John and Wes came out today, John went and got a few buckets of water to try to get some moisture back in a few really dry spots.  Needing some rain as always it seems like.  John broke out the Heckler and started figuring it out.  I don't think it took him as long as he thought it would, it was good to see.

I removed a hump that was in the bottom of a low spot and piled it up in preparation for the jump on the hill.  Kinda hard to tell what's going on in the photo but I still thought it was kinda cool the way the fall sun is coming in.  Pretty sure I have enough dirt for this jump and with some rock filler I should be able to get the one in before it also, fingers crossed.

6/17/12 -6/19/12 Falling Creek

Saturday morning I made it out and started running the ditch witch trying to scrape some dirt up for the step up/hip.  Within the first 2 scrapes I busted the main bolt that holds the 6 way blade on, no fun.  It really needs moisture out there before trying to scrape and actually do any good.   I went and swapped out for the bucket and tried to do some scraping with it and it just wanted to dig too much so I decided to call it quits on that.  Kenny had moved some dirt down from a secret stash spot since we have depleted our dirt that was brought in, hopefully we can get more dirt when the new year comes.  I was moving it up the hill when I saw a few people starting to come down the hill.  Ended up being quite a few people, I've had a really good response from our local bmx community and I wasn't really expecting it, they came out with about 10 people on Saturday.  Randy, Peake, and Chris showed up later to give a hand but there really was only so much that could be done.  Randy and Peake made a few rock runs while I finished moving dirt up the hill.  We finished up and then went and road with everyone.  I'm kinda beating myself up a little bit.  I had asked around all summer trying to figure out what style of riding to build this to.  Basically trying to figure out who would be the most likely to use it and build to suit that style of riding.  I went into this building it for "freeride" mid travel all mountain type bikes, because it seems to be the genre of bike most people have.  If I would've known that I would've received this type of interest from the bmx community I would've been more likely to change the way I built things.  Everyone seems to be having fun and that's what matters.  One great thing is, it's just dirt so it will mold and grow with the community.  Looking forward to seeing what this looks like next year this time and even further down the road.

On Sunday Taylor, Joey, Will, Jess and I made it out and we road.  This was really the first day I've been out and really haven't done any work.  I road my bike, hung out with everyone and enjoyed the spot.  Decided to shoot some video clips too while I was hanging out, I need to get a camera.

John and I made it back out Monday afternoon and Kenny had moved a good bit more dirt onto the hill at the bottom.  The ditch witch was already overheating so I road some and added some fresh dirt to the second jump lip.  It had really mellowed out from all the traffic, which is good!  You can see the fresh lip near the end of the vid.

11/14/12 Falling Creek Update

John and I were out today after Monday night's rain.  It removed some of the fresh dirt that was put down so we were working on replacing it and packing it back down.  He tamped down most of the landings and I hit up the lips, I still need to add some more dirt to the newest table at the bottom.  I added some dirt at the top on either side of the new table.  If you are wondering about the watermarks in the cell phone pictures, ha.  It's because of something called fraud clicking, something where people take the blog and use it to get clicks or something, the watermarks are suppose to help...

It was basically dark at 5:45 tonight.

11/9/12-11/12/12 Falling Creek Update

Friday, John and I made it out and decided to change the rollers into a table top because it was messing up the rhythm.

It looked like this when we left friday night.

Saturday morning John, Randy, Jess and I met out there.  Randy and John went to get water and soaked everything down really good.  While they were getting water, I was moving dirt and Jess shaped up the table top.  It looked like this Saturday afternoon.

Sunday morning John, Jess, Randy and I met out there again.  There wasn't much dirt left so I started moving it down to the 3rd jump landing and onto the down slope of the roller before it.  Randy and John went to get water and Jess shaped up the landing.  About the time it was starting to take shape, Taylor, Will, Charlie, Joey and Ashley showed up.  They checked everything out while we were getting the last few loads of dirt down the hill.  They were starting to give the first jumps a go while the fresh dirt was getting watered down. I had to let the ditch witch cool down for a minute before getting the last few loads of dirt down the hill, Joey had already found a shovel and started packing the new table in.  I got the ditch witch going again and he asked if I could drop another bucket or two on the new table.  Taylor came down the hill and started helping Jess get the landing on the 3rd jump stomped in.  We got more water on the fresh dirt and hung out for a bit while it was drying.  We couldn't wait any longer and had to get some riding in, it was really nice out!

Photo by Will of Taylor checking out the new table.

Photo by Taylor from his GoPro on the 5th jump.  Sweet!  Really dig the shadow.

Photo by Joey from his GoPro on the 2nd jump (new table).  Looking down on Charlie, dig it!

John and I made it back out again today (Monday).  John got out there a lot earlier to get in some laps and he packed in all the fresh dirt where we had watered it the night before.  When I got there it was really windy, I decided to give the new table some love.

It gets dark too early..  Before I left I was messing with some light in the dark, here ya go..

11/6/12 & 11/7/12 Falling Creek Update

John and I made it out yesterday and today to get some riding in before dark, short days are a bummer.  John made it out before I did and packed some stuff in before we road.  Super grip on Monday and today it was perfect, rolling fast and grippy.  The happy ending was riding really nice, it had me really looking forward to the next hit.  Daylight savings is a bummer and the cold days feel like winter is already here.  This weekend is suppose to bring in some warmer weather.  Fingers crossed.

Here's a couple of quick clips, one is from Sunday actually and the other is from today.

11/2/12-11/4/12 Falling Creek Update

Friday, John made it out on a windy and chilly afternoon to help with the ending on the berm.  We got some top soil down to the landing and spread it around.  It was starting to blend in with the natural slope of the hill.  When we left it looked something like this.

Saturday morning I got up there at 11 and started moving more top soil down to work on the lip and landing some more.  Randy got there about an hour later and Jess came out not long after.  They went to get water and rock while I was moving dirt down the hill.  I was making the lip and filling the backside of it so people could roll it safely.  They brought back lots of water and some rock.  The berm got soaked and the lip came to shape.  When we got the lip watered we got the berm again and packed it in.  We let it dry a little bit, walked it in and slapped it with shovels.  When we got a good look at the lip, we decided to widen the landing a few feet.  After adding that on we were really itching to give it a try so we got it packed down some more and gave it a few runs!  Good fun.  Still really slow until it firms up.  We packed it in again before we left.

Sunday I didn't get out until noon, it was really nice out.  Jess was already there and apparently there was a group out there when he got there.  It had rained out there pretty good so there was decent moisture in the dirt.  This really being the last weekend day before daylight savings I went ahead and decided to get in something small.  I'm bummed the shorter days are here already.  I moved some dirt down to start the piles for two rollers.  Jess started shaping them up and about that time Randy got there.  We shaped it into what looked like two good rollers and began putting some tire tracks on it.  It was actually almost warm out when we started riding and it was fun.  I'm stoked to get a few more things in, it'll get even better.

11/1/12 Falling Creek Update

Today took motivation, it was windy and cold out.  I knew it would be a solo day today so I brought the headphones and that helps a ton.  I flattened a mound out below the berm and moved the dirt up the hill to help create the base for the landing.  I will fade it into the natural down slope of the hill.

Daylight savings is so close, no fun.  Looking forward to riding the Happy Ending!

Grass already starting to grow on the jumps.
