Hurtin' for Vert 2012 - Part One of Four

If it wasn't for Johnny Smoke, I might not be as stoked as I am on riding.  When no one around my area could answer the questions about a long travel bike that I had. (2001ish)  I called Deep Cove in North Van and of all people to pick up the phone it was him.  He was super helpful, I called him over and over with some of the stupidest questions but he was always happy to answer them.  I still need to go ride my bicycle with him.  http://www.pinkbike.com/news/Hurtin-for-Vert-2012-Part-1-of-4.html

10/28/12 Falling Creek Update

Really good turnout today.  John, Randy, Jeff and Jess came out to dig and ride!  I know you may be thinking 4 people is a good turnout?  Yup it is and especially when those 4 come out for a full day and put in hard work, it really makes a big difference in what gets done.  Randy and I just met Jess about a week ago, he stumbled upon the trail after coming over to play disc golf and seeing the pump track sign.  Jess is a ripper and obviously has worked with dirt before.  He jumped in like I wished everyone would, he knows what's up and it shows! We worked on the Happy Ending berm, got more dirt scraped up and moved onto it.  Then shaped it into it's initial shape, it needs some top soil and moisture.  After shaping and watering it down some so Sandy didn't blow it away John and Randy started bringing in some rock to use as filler for the landing.  It rained on us off and on, the wind began to pick up with some rain thrown in around 6 as it was starting to get dark so we decided to call it a day.  The moisture Sandy brings should be a great help.   Enough talking...  action speaks louder than words!

Happy Ending, still working on the making the ending happy.

What a cool canvas, it asked for jumps and berms.  Some people like paint, I like dirt.

10/27/12 Falling Creek Update

I left the Halloween Jam early to try and get some work done at Falling Creek before daylight savings and now Frankenstorm Sandy.  I got out there about 3; John and Randy were already there and had got some more buckets to fill with water.  They watered everything down real heavily since all the newer work was ready to blow away.  Kyle from Blacksburg made his way there after fighting through my rediculous directions.  He helped Randy and John for a while then got in a few runs.  I'd say after about his 4th or 5th run he started finding tranny.  Within the next few runs he was already throwing the bike around, good to see.  I worked more on the berm, I really don't feel like I got that much done.  I was tired from the morning's ride, good stuff!  I got some more dirt moved around and the berm started to look even more like a berm. Stoked, it's going to be really fun!

10/26/12 Falling Creek Update

Made it out Friday afternoon about 3 or so, good temps but cloudy day.  John and Chuck were already there putting in runs, he brought a few buckets and a watering can and started watering down pretty much everything.  It helped a ton, hopefully this coming week's weather from Sandy will water everything else down.  It's really dusty out there.   A few riders from Danville made it up to check things out.  They seemed stoked, hope to have them back soon.

10/25/12 Falling Creek Update

Awesome day at Falling Creek today. It was a solo day but I was able to get some dirt moved. The berm is finally beginning to look somewhat like one. It'll get there, I am wishing for a mini excavator it would really speed things up.

After the first hour or so..

Night time, it's getting dark early.  It was pretty dark at 7.... boo.....  now possible snow next week?  Could be good it'll pack stuff down.

I brightened this up.... sorry for the crap photos but it was dark....

10/24/12 Falling Creek Update

Another day at Falling Creek Park!  Real nice out, a little warm for a fall day.  I'll enjoy it while it's here, it'll be chilly soon.  I was working on cutting in the berm some more.  Jon brought out some buckets and a watering can.  He gave the big left handed berm some serious love.  I'm trying to get in as much as I can before daylight savings on November 4th.  My goal was/is Oct. 31st and I think I can come pretty close.  We'll see, I like to set goals that are difficult just to see if I can obtain them, I knew in this case November 4th was the real upcoming problem because it'll kill the time available to spend out here.

NBR:  There is a RC Airport out at Falling Creek and they are always flying some really cool RC's.  The jets have taken the cake until today.  A guy used the RC Airport to launch his powered parachute, kinda cool....

Sorry for the crap photo it was pretty dark when I was heading out, finally starting to cut the inside of the berm, the mound of dirt there was good sized.  It'd be great if it'd rain, I know it'd cut better.

Rocks and Gold

Looks like snow is on the shore already.  It's not far from us then.  It's amazing how short fall is, it's such a awesome time of year, I love the temps.  It's a shame we can't have another 2 weeks of it.  It looks like North Vancouver's fall was even shorter.  I always try and pay attention to what these guys are up to.  They do excellent work.

10/23/12 Falling Creek Update

Another really nice day out at Falling Creek Park today.  Jon and Chuck made it out today, they added some dirt and watered down some berms and lips.  Doing a rain dance, need a good soaker.  I worked on shaving off a large hump at the bottom of the 4th jump landing and began to cut in the berm after.  It's going to take a good amount of time to get this berm in.  That Oct. 31st goal is approaching quickly and with daylight savings right around the corner it will really limit the amount of time available to work on this trail.  It will likely be weekends only.  Once this berm is in, the rest should not take long.  With the amount of dirt coming from this berm it should make getting this berm and possibly the landing to the step down done easier.

With the absence of rain in the Lower Mainland this summer, the trails have been dry and dusty. The past few weeks mended this dry spell with downpours and we couldn't be more thankful. 10/21/12 Falling Creek Update

Another day at Falling Creek and it was a really good day, probably one of the best days I've had out there.  Randy came out for the day and Jeff made it out a little later.  Randy is getting around better but is still in significant pain and cannot afford to wreck.  He was spreading dirt as I was bringing it down.  Jeff made it out around 2 or 3, he shoveled, stomped, watered while he was there and then got in a few runs.  He was getting it figured out by the end of the session.  The days when you get to finish something and ride it are the days that really seem to stand out.  We got in what is now the 4th jump.  We watered and packed the lip enough to get a run at it.  The landing needs to be watered and packed in. It may need more dirt.  I started cutting for the berm shaving the high spot and moving it down near the exit of the berm.  Really looking forward to getting back out there.

10/20/12 Falling Creek Update

Jon made it out again today for the long haul.  Matt and Kyle showed up a little later in the afternoon.  Kyle got some good photos and Matt helped move some dirt.  Matt also brought out his hardtail and got to rip it for the first time.  Getting the old hardtail legs back is always tough, but he seemed to be having no problems.  I think he scared himself a little at the end, good times!  Got some dirt moved, that's about it.  Got pretty close to finishing the 4th jump but didn't quite finish.  Thanks to Kyle for the photos!

10/19/12 Trough D-Cup

We had a good time today at the final d-cup race.  We hit up Trough at the Cove and it was dusty and slick.  Weather was awesome, really couldn't ask for better.  This was the first trip down Trough on the new ride.  I found out on the way up my seat was too far back and the rear shock needed more air.  I had a fun run, I always enjoy hitting the jumps and berms on trough.  I hadn't hit Lt. Lee in a few months and while it's not a big jump, it's a ton of fun.  You also roll at a pretty good pace into it so that makes it fun too.   Here is a chest pov vid and the results.

10/17/12 Falling Creek Update

Sorry no photos.  I'll try and get some next time I'm out there.  We worked on the 4th jump landing some more and it's looking pretty good, it may need to be a little longer still.  I forgot the leaf blower so the ditch witch was running hot and had to turn it off a little early.  That allowed me to ride and check out the 3rd jump we had put some recent work into.  The lip was a hair to steep at the top and was causing some nose heaviness for a majority of riders so I decided to tone it down just a hair.  It seems like it's gonna be great.  I may end up having to make it a little taller still.  I will be diggin the bottom of it out to have a pump to go into it and making it a little longer.  It'll help settle both wheels before going off of it, making it more predictable.

I plan on being out again this weekend and getting a good bit done.  We are suppose to get some rain tomorrow fingers crossed it always helps a ton getting rain out there.  I had a good turnout today, Jon, Davy and Kelly came out today and it was good stuff.  Jon and Davy gave some love to the 4th jump landing and Kelly got in some runs.  She hadn't been there before and was really catching on quickly.  I dig it!  Good to see!

10/16/12 Falling Creek

I made it out late this afternoon.  It is definitely Fall, shorter days, low sun light, leaves changing colors and starting to get chilly when the sun drops behind the hill.  I really enjoy this time of year and would like to be in the woods on the mountain riding.  However this is not a bad trade off, it is work but in the end it is worth it.  Just being outside on days like today make working on trails that much better.

I'm really looking forward to riding this top to bottom.  This is the first legal opportunity I've found to build something regular bike sized for the community.  It's a great feeling to build stuff, ride it, and then share it with other people.  I use to live by the rule of "No Dig, No Ride"; but it really doesn't help a community.  I guess I'm just taking a different approach these days in hopes of pushing my local riding scene.  I keep the hope that with creating more riding opportunities there will be more like minded individuals show themselves.  It's amazing the difference when you have a few people working vs. just one.  I have deffinitely seen some improvement in this over the years, but sometimes it's easy to get discouraged.  In the end, it's really cool to watch others push themselves and improve their riding.

The ditch witch was out of fuel, so I ended up working on some of the landings. Kenny had moved a few loads of dirt down the hill with the tractor and dump bed, any bit of dirt moving really speeds things up. I got a feeling he worked until the ditch witch ran out of fuel and probably had something else to do. I hope to have the 4th jump in by tomorrow. If more dirt ends up down there easily accessable, I think it's likely.

The current 3rd jump landing got some love as well as the 4th jump to be landing.   (still needs lots more love)     few photos..

10/12/12 Friday.  The dirt showed up on Thursday.  I couldn't get out of work in enough time to make it worth while to get out there and start moving dirt.  Friday, Chris and Jon came out to help and get a few runs in.  I started getting some dirt moved for the next jump landing.  Also tossed a little fresh dirt on the previous landing to help smooth it out.
